Venice Floating Pavilion*

Venice, Italy

2013

This competition entry for a floating pavilion to be utilized in conjunction with the annual Venice Biennale exhibition proposes a series of volumes produced from a progression of parallel pneumatic (air-inflated) tubes that are lightweight, transportable, easily assembled / disassembled, durable and aesthetically dynamic.  By transforming the pavilion from a simple platform for exhibition into a multi-volume assemblage of event spaces, the proposed design acts flexibly, able to accommodate a variety of activities and experiences.  The proposed pneumatic method of construction is highly flexible in sections accommodating different types of entertainment and performance.

*This project received an honorable mention award from ArchTriumph, Venice Pavilion International Design Competition.

Color, Wave Aggregation*

 Louisville, KY

2014

This proposal for the Louisville Centennial Festival of riverboats celebrates the continuity of the river through a continuously undulating roof form that mimics the forms of waves. Each pavilion is composed of four distinct pentagonal units that through their various aggregations provides a subtle, but varying roof profile and also provides various spatial configurations able to accommodate the specified programs like bourbon tasting, exhibition and performance activities.

Although pavilion configurations vary, all are constructed using the same system of compressive bamboo spindle columns, a series of tensile woven rope arches and two types of semi-transparent shade cloth spanning between woven rope lattices.  The system is designed to be lightweight, easily constructed and flexible, substantial in its visual presence, ephemeral in its material specificity capable of undulating in the wind.

*This project was a collaboration with Sarosh Anklesaria for the Centennial Riverboat Festival Pavilions

International Design Competition.
